Did you know that the amount of insects in the world has gone down drastically in the last 20 years?
Why should you care? Maybe you like an insect free world? Yes I have heard some comments like that… well, insects are having a hard go at it these days. Take a look at this Yale University report to see why it matters to you.
Insects are responsible for many processes in the food chain (remember the food chain from elementary school?) and their role really depends on the type and there are thousands of insects in the world. In the western world we often practice arachnophobia, yes I say practice because you are not the spiders’ target market. The flies are. The mosquitoes are. So when you kill a spider in your home you are removing your fly and mosquito army and leaving your home defenseless to the insects which are actually bothersome (or potentially dangerous). More than that, each insect you kill is removed from the food chain altogether unable to complete it’s life mission and support your life. YES LIFE.
Insects play a key role in agriculture, from fertilizing the edible plants to preparing the soil for cultivation, they may arguably do more than farmers to feed you each and every day. All that work for you and the poor insects experience a thankless existence with a terrible reputation that spreads like wildfire throughout our human community. I invite you to think of the work that insects do to sustain you the next time you encounter one in your house. I invite you to be like an ancient merciful god – grant the insect clemency and remove it from your house; allow it to complete it’s very important life mission.
End of insect commentary.
There are so many lessons that we can learn from the plight of the insect. Lessons that are translatable to our lives and our businesses alike.
The problem is with our society. Killing insects is just the beginning.
You may think I am being far fetched when I say that the habit to kill insects on sight is a telltale sign of a damaged society . You yourself may be a kind and loving person.
Think about all of the other things people in our society tend to jump on and kill on sight:
- Business ideas
- Expressions of creativity
- Exploration of scientific data that is not aligned with the main stream thinking
- Eccentricity
- and more…
When you think about it not much has changed since the time of Copernicus (who was Polish by the way!) and Gallileo. They presented an unusual idea and the whole world jumped on them, simply because the world already believed something else.
Just because you believe differently, just because you could not pull it off, just because you don’t like the color blue are not reasons to jump on someone and pulverize their unusual ideal all to bits.
Don’t kill it!
Opinions, weird habits, eccentric outfits, weird business ideas… most of these do not hurt you. Most people who act in ways you have no interest in emulating have no impact whatsoever on you and your life. Leave them the heck alone. Let them enjoy their eccentricities without any unnecessary commentary, it is enough to know that the idea is not for you.
Let’s not live in a society of idea cannibals who scrape and scramble to push the other people down and out.
An old dutch proverb tells us to “Live and let live.” Let’s all work together to elevate each other. Let’s all leave the weird people alone and concentrate on what makes our own hearts sing. Let’s focus on what works, what is good and what resonates with you.
Don’t be an idea cannibal.
